Jute, Oakum, Cedar bark and cambium nesting material and tinder Easy to make a quick bird's nest! Start your fire quickly using Jute and oakum as a tinder! Oakum: The material used in Oakum comes from the fiber of virgin natural hemp or jute. The fibrous material of Oakum is very flammable and makes for a great tinder bundle. It makes for a wonderful nesting material when separated and fluffed up to use with bow drills, hand drills, fire pistons, flint and steel, char cloth, etc.,to start your fire. It can also be ignited very easily using a ferrocerium rod or fire steel or with just a strong magnifying glass. Jute Rope, 15 ft.: Jute is a long, soft, shiny vegetable fiber that can be spun into coarse, strong threads to make twine and rope. It is great to use as a nesting material to start a fire using an ember from char cloth, char rope, bow drill, hand drill, fire piston, flint and steel, etc. The nest that you see on the photos is made from 6 inches of jute rope. Jute is also a great fire tinder and catches easily on fire when used with a ferrocerium rod or fire steel to ignite it. Jute fiber is 100% bio-degradable and recyclable and thus environmentally friendly. I have coiled and bundled the 15 ft. jute rope in such a way that you can pull one end of the rope to get the length that you need and it stays coiled without you having to uncoil or unravel the whole thing each time you need to use some. Cedar Bark and Cambium Nesting Material: The cedar bark and cambium nesting material is hand harvested. Cambium is the "inner" bark of the tree. It blows into flames very easily. It makes for a very good bird's nest and tinder bundle.
