When struck with a piece of flint, small particles of the steel are scrapped off that quickly oxidize in the air, turning into sparks through a process know as pyrophoricity. These small sparks can be "caught" with a piece of charred cloth that will grow an ember that can then be used to ignite larger tinder to build a fire. It is a process that takes patience and practice to master, but is an excellent skill to learn as an alternative to modern fire lighting techniques.
