Bow Drill Spindles – Sotol, Cottonwood, Cedar – Bushcraft Friction Fire Starter!

Bow Drill Spindle made from Sotol, Cottonwood, Cedar - Primitive Friction Fire Starters! Harvested and handcrafted These spindles are made from Sotol, Cottonwood and Cedar. They are processed and handcrafted by me personally. The bow drill is an ancient tool used to make friction fire. The bow drill consists of a bearing block or handhold, a spindle or drill, a hearth or fireboard, and a simple bow. As the word 'Primitive Fire' implies, I harvested each Sotol, Willow and Cedar wood spindle. Each spindle is hand processed and hand crafted to make it feel as if you yourself were out in the wilderness and had to make your own to use with your bow drill to make fire. They won't look or feel like you bought them from a store or that they came out of a factory or woodshop. The bow drill offers an ancient and primitive method of starting fire without matches or a lighter. It’s a method that applies friction to generate heat. The heat eventually produces an ember in the burnt wood dust. The ember is tiny and fragile. Once it is formed it is carefully placed into a "tinder bundle" where it is carefully nurtured and coaxed into flame. Once the tinder bundle bursts into flame, it is placed into the fuel that has been assembled ready for ignition. About your Bow Drill Spindle made from Cedar Wood:These Wood Drills or Spindles are made from Sotol, Cottonwood and Cedar. Each one is hand-crafted to make sure that it is as straight as possible and that each will rotate nicely with very little wobble, if any, when spinning. Each spindle has been tested and burnt in to make sure that they will work properly when used to make a coal ember.Sotol Spindle: Sotol has one of the lowest ember point in a spindle that you can find. It is very light compared to other spindles made of other types of wood. Each Sotol spindle weighs somewhere between .5 - 1.2 ounces only!Cottonwood Spindle: Like Sotol, cottonwood has one of the lowest ignition points for a spindle that you can use and it is also very light.Cedar spindle: If for some reason you need to start a fire right away and don't have the time to start one using the bow drill you can do the following using the cedar wood spindles. Cedar has its own natural oil so if you're skilled with your knife, you can use it to scrape fine dust from the cedar spindle and lightly carve very thin curly curls like you see in the photos. You can also use a broken piece of glass or something similar to do this just be careful not to cut yourself accidentally. You can then ignite the cedar wood dust and thin curly curl mound using a ferrocerium rod. What you will receive with your purchase:One Sotol, one Cottonwood and one Cedar spindle that are already burnt in to make sure they burn and spin properly.Sotol Spindle: Material: Sotol hand processed and hand craftedLength: About 8-9 inchesWeight: less than 1.0 ounce Cedar SpindleMaterial: Cedar wood hand processed and craftedLength: About 8-9 inches Weight: about 1.5 ouncesCottonwood SpindleMaterial: Cottonwood hand processed and hand craftedLength: About 8-9 inchesWeight: less than 1.0 ounceCheck out my other items: Click here to see all of my e-Bay items

Bow Drill Spindle made from Sotol – Primitive Friction Fire, hand harvested!

Sotol Spindle Primitive Friction Fire! Low ignition point and lighter than other types of wood! The bow drill is an ancient and primitive method of starting fire without matches or a lighter. It consists of a bearing block or handhold, a spindle, a hearth board or fire board, and a simple bow. It’s a method that applies friction to generate heat. The heat eventually produces an ember in the burnt wood dust. The ember is tiny and fragile. Once it is formed it is carefully placed into a "tinder bundle" where it is carefully nurtured and coaxed into flame. As the word 'Primitive Fire' implies these spindles won't look and feel as if they just came out of a factory warehouse or woodshop. I've found that Sotol spindles and fire boards are easier and faster in creating a coal dust ember compared to other types of wood. With an ember ignition point of around 200 degrees, Sotol has one of the lowest ignition points for a spindle that you can use. A few stokes with the bow and it starts to smoke right away. This means that you'll have fewer strokes to create a coal ember for your nesting material to start your fire. This translates to creating coal ember faster and less work which means fewer calories needed! Sotol in my opinion is the finest friction fire making material in North America. So if you have access to Sotol, then prepare for success... it will literally spoil you! About your Bow Drill Sotol Spindle:Made from Sotol plant.
