The bow drill is an ancient tool used to make friction fire. It's a primitive method of starting fire that applies friction to generate heat. The heat eventually produces an ember in the burnt wood dust. The ember is tiny and fragile. Once it is formed it is carefully placed into a "nest or tinder bundle" where it is carefully nurtured and coaxed into flame. Once the tinder bundle bursts into flame, it is placed into the fuel (kindling) that has been assembled ready for ignition. Bow drills were used between the 4th and 5th millennium BC. The bow drill consists of a bearing block or handhold, a spindle or drill, a hearth or fireboard, and a simple bow. Bayog Bamboo makes for a great bow for bow drills. It is lightweight, flexible, tough, and has a high tensile strength which is the resistance of a material to breaking under tension. Bayog Bamboo is ideal for construction. The walls are so thick that there's only a tiny hole in the center. It is unlike the bamboo that most people associate with which has a big hole. Bayog Bamboo is also known as timber bamboo and is used as posts or stilts for constructing houses and bridges for people to cross rivers in countries like the Philippines.These Bayog Bamboo bows are made from the branches of Bayog Bamboo. Parts description:Bayog Bamboo Bow: Harvested and handcrafted from the branch of a Bayog bamboo, each bow is slightly different from each other and has its own unique look. Each one is treated with boiled linseed oil to enhance its water resistance.Handhold: Made from ash and treated with boiled linseed oil. It has a steel plate insert that is virtually frictionless for the spindle to spin on. The steel plate insert is shiny enough to use as a signal like a mirror in an emergency situation.Spindles: Cedar and Sotol. Each spindle is carefully handcrafted to make sure it is as straight as possible so that it will spin with very little wobble, if any. Each spindle has been tested and burned in to make sure that it works properly.Fireboard: Sotol and Cottonwood. Each fireboard is burnt-in with a /-notch cutout. Bow String: 8-strand paracord which is rot resistant and tough. As seen on the photos, one long piece of paracord string is used with half of the string already tied to the bow and the other half is wrapped around the handle to be used as a quick back up as the string eventually wears out and breaks. Since the back-up string is already tied on the handle end of the bow all you need to do is tie the other end to the tip of the bow for a fast transition. You can also take the whole string from the bow and use it as cordage if the need arises.Coal or Ember Catcher: Genuine Leather. The leather is large enough to use as a sling shot pouch if you have the other parts to make one.Nesting Material: 2 long strands of Oakum. Oakum comes from the fiber of virgin natural hemp or jute. The fibrous material of Oakum is very flammable and makes for a great nest or tinder bundle when separated and fluffed up. It can also be ignited very easily using a ferrocerium rod or fire steel.Charcloth in waterproof cannister: made with tightly weaved, thick 10 oz. 100% natural cotton. It is stored in a waterproof cannister as seen in the pictures. To highly increase the odds of igniting the nest with the ember you just produced, take a small piece of charcloth and place it in the middle of the nest once it made and ready for an ember.Fatwood: Small bundle of fatwood comes with your kit. It is highly flammable. Once you have ignited the nest and placed it with your kindling, take one piece and place it in the nest. Using a knife or your firesteel striker, you can scrape the fatwood and ignite it with a ferro rod or firesteel if you want to get a fire going quickly.
