Try at least middle sized rod like 8mm x 80mm or 10mm x 100mm - the thicker and longer the better, as will be easier to use. Please note like alot of ferro rods these flints come with a protective film over them. So when you start you dont get best performance until a few scraps have taken off the outer layer. This is when a broken hacksaw blade makes a really good striker. Then you will find with practice and use you will get the best perforance from your rod.
