Information about Fire steels The ferrocerium rod commonly known as the Fire steel was developed by the Swedish Dept., of Defense to be a weatherproof fire starter for it’s troops.When scraped by a sharp piece of steel it will produce a shower of sparks capable of igniting dry tender-even when the fire steel is wet & will work equally well at any altitude. It can even be used to start charcoal or gas grills! The Custom hand turned Tactical Fire Steel offered here has a ferrocerium rod 5/16 OD " in diameter and has approximately 2 1/2 "exposed length for scraping. The handle is 5/8 " in diameter and 2 " long. Overall the fire steel is approximately 4 " in length. The Black Delrin handle is approx., 2 inches Long x 1/2 inch Wide. Attached to the Black Delrin Handle is a metal lathe parting tool bit 3/16" square x 1/2--5/8" exposed for striking.. which will way out last the chrome plated strikers you see elsewhere and makes a satisfying SCROTCH!!!!! while filling the area around with globs of molten metal sparks! This baby will light a self sub staining fire on a piece of newspaper or paper towel with just one stroke. The handles of the fire steel and striker have been turned on my lathe from Black Acetyl( DELRIN) plastic and feature grooves around the circumference 1/16" wide and approximately .040" deep for a secure grip. *********************************************************** ~~ Please do not hold me to the exact measurements of these~~ Each Firesteel that I make is hand crafted and NOT one is exactly alike... The striker is connected to the fire steel handle via eye screws and a length of para cord with the colors of the Vietnam Service Ribbon which are Red.. Green... Yellow This is a compact design that packs small and will work well in many other applications. ________________________________________________ Fire steels of this size are generally rated for well over 6,000 strikes, & given the ferocity of the rain of sparks this bad boy throws, you will probably never need to buy another - Please note:A piece of survival gear, no matter how good, will only function well if you know how to use it when you need it, so may I suggest you practice making fire with your new fire steel before you need it. First, start small....Get a cotton ball, rub a small amount of petroleum jelly into it then pull it apart a bit to make it bigger. Place it outside on a fireproof surface (Safety First!!!!)…….. Hold the fire steel by the handle in your left hand with its end near the cotton ball (If you are right handed, use opposite hands if you are left handed) …….. Hold the square striker blade with one corner at about a 30 degree angle to the top surface of the fire steel rod with your other hand, Then scrape toward the bottom of the rod fast and hard! You should generate a shower of big bright hot sparks and the cotton ball should burst into flame and burn 20 seconds to well over a minute depending on how much petroleum jelly you used. You may not get many sparks the first few times (it does take a little practice) but, as you gain experience you will find yourself making fire with nearly every strike! Cotton balls and petroleum jelly are cheap and pack small, but this fire steel will also ignite larger, less flammable kindling... Try it on dry grass, leaves, cloth.... things you might have to light in a real emergency, if only so you'll know you can!
