Oakum Tinder and Cattail Fluff Fire Starter The material used in Oakum comes from the fiber of virgin natural hemp or jute. The fibrous material of Oakum is very flammable and makes for a great tinder. It also makes for a really good nesting material when separated and fluffed up to use with bow drills, hand drills, fire pistons, flint and steel, char cloth, char rope, etc., to start your fire. It can be ignited very easily using a ferrocerium rod or fire steel or with just a strong magnifying glass. Cattail fluff is a great fire starter. Ignite it easily with your fire steel or ferrocerium rod. The cattail fluff is packed and stuffed as much as a 3x5 Ziploc bag can hold. Just be careful when opening the bag because the fluff might pour out. The cattail is hand harvested and handpicked.
